If you have a rough idea of what you are looking for we can usually build it. Let me use an example to demonstrate the process:
A young couple has purchased a very comfortable sectional sofa for their living room. They are having trouble finding coffee or end tables to go with it. Any they find are too large for the room.
Step one is to go to the home. We talk with the couple about how they live in the room. They don’t do a lot of formal entertaining. Often friends come over to watch TV. They want places to put drinks and snacks, but know there will also be a lot of feet on the coffee tables. It would be nice if they had a place for reading materials as well. |

Step two is to take measurements of the room and the current furniture. With that I usually take pictures. | ![]() |
From the measurements and pictures a computer generated scale sketch of the room is used to give them many options. In this case, separate small coffee tables with three sizes to choose from and end tables with a raised area for lamps | ![]() |
They felt their dog would knock the lamps off the tables. Therefore, they didn’t want the raised back section and instead asked that I add a lower shelf for reading material. They chose the 16-inch coffee tables and felt two were enough. | ![]() |
Step three is to choose color and style. Now I do a more true to life computer design. Since the couple will frequently use the coffee tables for a footrest, I offered a table in which the top can be flipped over. One side has a padded cushion for feet. | ![]() |
The tables are also placed in the original room sketch. The couple can then review and make changes at their leisure in their own home. |
|
If needed, step four is to create full-scale models. They help determine the amount of taper for the legs, the position of the shelves, and general proportions. All of which can be harder to appreciate on a flat sketch. | ![]() ![]() |
Step five is to select the best wood. Special attention is placed on the grain pattern. The final appearance can be much different simply by orienting the grain in different directions.
Step six is the actual construction of the pieces. Joints are often roughed out by machine, but are finished by hand to ensure a tight, quality fit. Well-fitted joints make strong pieces that are likely to last a long time even under hard use | ![]() |
All pieces are pre-clamped to check the fit. Some of the fine details are best left to the end, such as how to complete the edges. This too is done to the customer’s desires. Round Over Chamfer Ogie Bull Nose |

Step seven is the finish. Most any finish can be used, from penetrating oil to a high gloss lacquer finish. Stains or paint colors are nearly unlimited. Stain can be mixed to match prior pieces as well. Delivery and installation is step eight. Custom cabinets will be installed at the convenience of the customer. Furniture will be put in the home where it is to be used. |
